Cozy Candles for Hygge at Home

Hey, there, it’s Sarah of Sadie Seasongoods again, with a new upcycling idea to share with you.

Even though a few mild days slide in and out of the forecast, it’s definitely still winter here in Charlotte! So, I thought it would be fun to create a project that honors “hygge”, which is a Scandinavian term that describes “the feeling of coziness, contentment, and well-being found through cherishing the little things”. Candles seemed like an ideal element of that, so why not create some cozy candles? And I knew that the Charlotte Region ReStores would have a great selection of glassware for me to choose from.

Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Clear glass vases or candleholders from the ReStore
  • Frosted glass spray paint
  • Flannel shirt or fabric
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue or other quick-drying craft glue
  • Winter floral embellishments, like greenery and pinecones
  • Battery-operated candles that fit your glassware
Safety First!

If you do any spray painting, make sure you have a well-ventilated area to work in. If you are working with a hot glue gun, make sure to keep your fingers away from the tip and don’t touch any recently-dispensed glue that is still soft.

Here’s how I made these cozy candles:

  • Head to one of our Charlotte Region ReStores and grab some clear glassware that can be used as candle holders. I found a terrific selection at the Cornelius ReStore!
  • Clean and dry your glassware, as needed. Then, set up a safe area to spray paint the exterior of your candle holders with a frosted glass spray paint. This will replicate the look of frosty windows!
  • This is what they’ll look like when they’re done- perfectly frosted!
  • Cut out a long strip of flannel fabric that can wrap around your candle holder with about 1” of overlap.
  • Optional step- I purposefully frayed the long edges of my flannel strips by pulling out some of the threads. I loved the texture that the fringe gave to my flannel wraps.
  • Wrap the flannel around your candle holder so that it lays flat and straight, but not too taut to distort the plaid. Then, hot glue one edge to the glass and the other edge on top of the first edge. Now you’re ready to embellish with wintery greens!
  • Once you’ve hot glued your embellishments on, it’s time to add your flameless battery-operated pillar candles. And that’s it!

Stay Cozy, Charlotte!

Isn’t that a fun way to create cozy décor using something that is easy to find at all of our ReStores? We’d love to see your versions of cozy candles. Please tag us (@cltregionrestore and @sadieseasongoods) with the hashtag #ReStorehygge to show off your cozy craft projects!
