DIY Vent Register for Storing Cards

Hey, there, it’s Sarah of Sadie Seasongoods again, with a new upcycling idea to share with you.
January is such a great time of year to work on organizing your home. Whether it’s a room, a closet, or even a single drawer, it feels so good to clean out (and donate to one of the local ReStores!) and re-organize throughout my home. And, of course, I’m always looking for things from Habitat ReStore that I can upcycle into handy organizers. Which brings me to today’s project- making a paper organizer from a vent register!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Vent register (aim for a wider one, which holds cards better)
- Craft glue or super glue
- Spray paint
- Clear topcoat
- Felt

Here’s how I made this card holder:
- Head to any of our Charlotte Region ReStores and look for a vent register in the home improvement section (I found mine at the Wilkinson ReStore). Look for registers that are wider, like one for a floor vent (with slots that are 5”-5½” wide). Narrower registers limit what you can store in them.
- Once you have your vent register, use some craft glue (or super glue, or hot glue!) to close or shut any flaps on the bottom (if need be).
- Then, spray paint your vent register in the color of your choice! You certainly could paint it with craft paint, but getting inside the metal slots might be troublesome!
- Once the paint was dry, I opted to protect my paint job with a clear topcoat. But this is definitely an optional step.
- Lastly, cut out a piece of felt or craft foam to glue to the underside of your register. This will prevent any sharp metal edges from scratching or scuffing a tabletop.
- Then, it’s time to put your vent register to work. I plan on storing greeting cards in mine, but you could use this for all sorts of paper items- business cards, seed packets, etc.
Let’s Get Organized!
Isn’t that a fun way to use something that is easy to find at all of our ReStores? We’d love to know what you would use this upcycling idea for. Please tag us (@cltregionrestore and @sadieseasongoods) with the hashtag #ReStoreOrganized to show off your vent register organizer projects!
